Doomsday Clock to change Jan. 14th

Postby General Doom on Mon Jan 11, 2010 5:15 pm

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) will move the minute hand of its famous "Doomsday Clock" at 10 a.m. EST/1500 GMT on January 14, 2010 in New York City. For the first time ever, the event will be opened up to the general public via a live Web feed at http://www.TurnBackTheClock.org

...

Factors influencing the latest Doomsday Clock change include international negotiations on nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation, expansion of civilian nuclear power, the possibilities of nuclear terrorism, and climate change.

Gee, I wonder which direction they'll move it. It's currently at 5 minutes to midnight. My guess is they'll move it either to 4 or 3 minutes to midnight, more likely 4.

Nuclear winter and potassium iodate, anyone? :happy-bouncyredfire:

Well the website name would suggest it was moving in the other direction "turnBACKtheclock". I agree it ought to be moving to four until also but who knows what they think or who is (actually) in control of the clock itself.

Yeah, I think "turn back the clock" is intended as an exhortion since they want to promote peace. Curious to see which direction they think we've gone since they last changed it.

I hope they move the doomsday clock to "Miller Time".

They moved it back from 5 to 6. The talks before the announcement were interesting.

After announcing the change, they talked about how Obama had altered the USA's approach to reaching out more internationally, and that was a big part of why. That we can now cooperate.

That's overly optimistic, in my opinion.

Yes, they talked about climate change a lot, and in general terms about geopolitical tensions and such, but nothing specific about energy that I heard (though I missed part of it).
