book: The Bread Builders: Hearth Loaves and Masonry Ovens (by Daniel Wing and Alan Scott)

Have not built such an oven, but have been interested in them for some time.

Voyaging on a Small Income - Annie Hill

Annie describes her life afloat. She goes into details about what we really need in order to survive and how little it is. She and her mate made enough money in a few years to live off of indefinitely because they live so simply. You don't need a boat to benefit from her experience.

Sea-Steading - Jerome FitzGeral

Less a "how to" book and more a philosophical rant on why we should. And he shows it can be done. I found it reached my soul in ways I have not considered in decades.

For the suppliers list: Sandhill Preservation Center. They are not a commercial operation so the delivery is unreliable, but it is the only one stop source for poultry I have found that is always what they say it is. They carry ducks, geese, chickens, turkeys, and guineas. I have ordered ducks and chickens from them and been happy with the quality. They also sell heirloom seeds. Everything is listed online but you have to order by mail. They say they will take orders by email when they can ship chicks through the internet!

I wanted to respond to the masonry ovens and suggest that Earthen/Cob ovens are easier and cheaper to make.

(though actually it appears to be far easier and just about as efficient to do it by drilling a hole and inserting a temp. probe from a so-called "kegerator" kit) such as this: http://www.homebrewing.org/Refrigerator ... p_433.html

No Tech Magazine has links to three thousand pages of 19th century technology in a three volume encyclopedia, which you can download any number of ways for free online. What I like about this is that there are nice illustrations of how to MAKE these things. Just skimming through one showed the schematics for making a loom, for example, with full instructions.
It is not despair, for despair is only for those who see the end beyond all doubt. We do not. It is wisdom to recognize necessity, when all other courses have been weighed, though as folly it may appear to those who cling to false hope. -- Gandalf (JRR Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring)
