Gay Evangelicals

Now I've seen everything.

I was at Seattle's pride parade last weekend. Among the entries were maybe ten GLBT friendly churches. OK. No big deal. One of the entries, though was from a church called "Living Water". This struck me as an oddly evangelical name for a pride parade entrant. It struck me even more oddly when their members after the parade were passing out fake money with a racial caricature of Obama, the church's name, and vitriolic attacks on abortion. So I did some research today. It turns out not only is Living Water a gay friendly evangelical church, but there is a whole movement of gay evangelicals. For example Evangelicals Concerned Inc. "Proclaiming the Good News of God's Love for Gay and Lesbian People" I thought I'd seen it all: environmentalist nazis, log cabin republicans. Physical Fitness

At the beginning of this year I was just about to turn 35, and I was almost 200 pounds overweight. In my mid thirties I'm starting to come to terms with the idea that if I don't start taking care of my body, it may not be around to take care of me. I started a combination of diet and exercise around the beginning of February. So far I've lost 85 pounds, and I'm maintaining a pretty steady rate of just over 3 pounds of weight loss per week. I feel great. I'm not hungry. Life is good. The best part is that, unlike prior attempts I've made at weight loss, this really feels more like a lifestyle change rather than a "diet" per se.

I've become a huge fan of Crossfit. Crossfit began as a local thing in Northern California back in the early 90's. Around 2000 they started a website where they post the workout of the day (WOD) and various videos of how to do the different excercises. Since then it's taken off like wild fire and become a grassroots movement with thousands of...

When heros are murdered.

Permanent Linkby smallpoxgirl on Fri Jun 12, 2009 5:10 pm

Crazy Horse. Martin Luther King. Malcolm X. Harvey Milk. George Tiller. Our heros reflect the best in us. Our strength. Our passion. Our ability to see the heart of the issue and speak to that heart. Our willingness to risk everything to fight for what is right. When those heros are murdered, it's as though that which is best in us dies with them.

George Tiller was to abortion providers, what Harvey Milk was to the gay community or Malcolm X to the black community. He, more than anyone I ever met was able to articulate the heart and the compassion of our work. George was a devout Christian. In every way he embodied the Christian principal "Greater love hath no man than that he lay down his life for another." George lived for decades with the knowledge that his life could be ended by bigots any time. His clinic was bombed and was repeatedly vandalized. He was shot and threats against his life became a daily routine. Despite all that, I never once heard George...
